Signs of a Rodent Infestation
Rodents are nocturnal and sneaky. Most people hear them before they see them. Here’s what to watch for:
- Droppings. Mouse droppings are small and dark, about the size of a grain of rice. Rat droppings are larger — roughly half an inch. Check along baseboards, in cabinets, under sinks, and near food storage areas.
- Scratching or scurrying sounds. Especially at night. In walls, ceilings, or attic spaces. Mice are light and quick. Rats are heavier — you’ll hear more of a thumping or dragging sound.
- Gnaw marks. Rodents chew constantly to keep their teeth worn down. Look for gnaw marks on food packaging, wood trim, electrical wiring, and plastic containers. Fresh gnaw marks are lighter in color.
- Nesting material. Shredded paper, fabric, insulation, or dried plant material gathered in hidden spots — behind appliances, in attic insulation, inside wall voids.
- Grease marks along walls. Rodents follow the same paths repeatedly. Their oily fur leaves dark smudge marks along baseboards and around entry holes.
If you’re seeing droppings or hearing noises, act fast. A pair of mice can produce dozens of offspring in just a few months. What starts as two becomes twenty before you know it.
Why Rodents Are Common in Boys Town
Boys Town’s location in west Omaha puts it in a transitional zone — established neighborhoods meeting newer development, with agricultural land not far to the west. That mix creates excellent rodent habitat.
The community’s mature trees, landscaping, and older structures provide harborage. Mice need a gap the size of a dime to squeeze inside. Rats need about a quarter-sized opening. We seal entry points — gaps around pipes, cracks in foundations, openings around utility lines, damaged vent screens — using professional-grade materials rodents can’t chew through. Steel wool, metal flashing, and commercial sealants. If you don’t seal the entry points, new rodents just move in after the old ones are gone.
