Mice and rats are a fact of life in rural Iowa. Signs of a Rodent Infestation
Rodents are mostly nocturnal, but they leave plenty of evidence behind:
- Droppings. Mouse droppings are small and dark, about the size of a grain of rice. Rat droppings are larger — roughly 1/2 to 3/4 inch. Check along walls, in cabinets, under sinks, and in the pantry.
- Gnaw marks. Rodents chew constantly to keep their teeth from overgrowing. Look for tooth marks on food packaging, wood trim, plastic containers, and even electrical wires.
- Scratching sounds. Hearing rustling, scratching, or scurrying in walls, ceilings, or attic spaces — especially at night — is a telltale sign.
- Nesting material. Shredded paper, fabric, insulation, or plant material gathered in hidden areas. Mice build nests in wall voids, attic insulation, drawer backs, and storage boxes.
- Grease marks. Rodents follow the same paths repeatedly. Their oily fur leaves dark smudge marks along baseboards, pipes, and wall edges.
Why Rodents Are Common in Crescent
Crescent is rodent country. Here’s why.
The surrounding agricultural fields provide grain and seed throughout the growing season. After harvest, those food sources disappear, and rodents that thrived in the fields migrate toward structures — homes, garages, sheds, barns. It happens every fall like clockwork.
The Missouri River bottomland supports dense populations of field mice, deer mice, and Norway rats. These animals naturally live outdoors but readily exploit human structures for shelter, food, and warmth. A mouse needs a gap only the size of a dime to get inside. A rat needs about a half-inch opening.
Older homes in Crescent often have gaps around foundations, unsealed utility penetrations, deteriorating weatherstripping, and open soffits that provide easy entry. Even newer construction can have vulnerabilities if it wasn’t built with rodent exclusion in mind.
One more thing — a single female mouse can produce 5 to 10 litters per year, each with 5 to 6 pups. What starts as a couple mice in October becomes a full infestation by January if left unchecked.

Exclusion. This is the most important step. We seal entry points with steel wool, metal flashing, caulk, and other rodent-proof materials. If rodents can’t get in, you won’t have a recurring problem. We’ll identify every gap we find and address as many as possible.
Sanitation recommendations. We’ll advise on food storage, garbage management, and clutter reduction to make your home less attractive to rodents.
Monitoring and follow-up. Rodent control often requires multiple visits to fully resolve. We monitor trap activity, replenish bait stations, and verify that exclusion work is holding. We don’t just treat once and walk away.
