Hearing scratching in the walls at night? Finding droppings in the kitchen drawers? Small chew marks on food packaging? You’ve got rodents. Mice and rats are some of the most common — and most destructive — pests in Grain Valley homes. They contaminate food, gnaw on wiring (creating fire hazards), and carry diseases.
Miller Pest Solutions has been solving rodent problems across the Kansas City metro since 2007. We don’t just trap a few mice and call it done. We find how they’re getting in and seal them out for good.
Signs of a Rodent Infestation
Rodents are mostly active at night. You might hear them before you see them. Here’s what gives them away:
- Droppings. Mouse droppings are small, dark, and rice-shaped. Rat droppings are larger — about the size of a raisin. You’ll find them in cabinets, drawers, along walls, and near food sources.
- Scratching or scurrying sounds. Especially at night. Mice run through wall voids, above ceilings, and under floors. Rats tend to be louder and heavier-sounding.
- Gnaw marks. Rodents chew constantly. Look for gnaw marks on food packaging, wood trim, plastic containers, and electrical wires.
- Grease marks. Rats leave dark, oily rub marks along walls and baseboards where they travel the same paths repeatedly.
- Nesting material. Shredded paper, fabric, insulation, and other soft materials gathered in hidden areas indicate an active nest.
Why Rodents Are Common in Grain Valley
Grain Valley sits in an area that’s perfect for rodent populations. The surrounding agricultural land and open fields support large numbers of field mice. As temperatures drop in fall, those mice head straight for the warmth of nearby homes.
House mice are the primary indoor rodent pest here. They can squeeze through a gap the size of a dime. Gaps around utility lines, dryer vents, garage doors, and foundation cracks all serve as entry points. Older homes tend to have more entry points, but even newer construction in Grain Valley’s growing developments can have gaps if builders didn’t seal everything properly.
Rats — particularly Norway rats — are present too, especially near creeks, drainage areas, and denser neighborhoods. They’re bolder and more destructive than mice, and they burrow under foundations and into crawl spaces.
Our Rodent Control Process
Snap traps from the hardware store might catch one or two mice. But if you don’t address the entry points, more are coming right behind them. Miller Pest Solutions takes a complete approach:
- Thorough assessment. We examine your home inside and out — foundation, roofline, utility penetrations, garage, attic, crawl space — to identify entry points and signs of activity.
- Trapping and removal. We set professional traps in strategic locations based on rodent travel patterns. No guesswork. We place traps where they’ll be most effective.
- Exclusion (sealing entry points). This is the critical step most companies skip. We seal gaps, cracks, and openings with appropriate materials — steel wool, metal flashing, hardware cloth, caulk — to prevent rodents from re-entering.
- Sanitation recommendations. We advise on reducing food access and eliminating conditions that attract rodents to your home.
- Monitoring and follow-up. We check traps, assess activity, and make sure the problem is fully resolved. Rodent control isn’t a one-visit job — it takes persistence.
