Kansas City’s rodent problem is as old as the city itself. Mice and rats have thrived here for generations — in Midtown Victorians, Northland split-levels, Johnson County colonials, and brand-new builds in Lee’s Summit and Olathe alike. The metro’s mix of urban density, sprawling suburbs, and variable weather creates year-round conditions for rodent infestations.
Miller Pest Solutions operates across the Kansas City metro on both sides of the state line. We’ve been in the pest control business since 2007, and rodent work is one of our core services. Trapping, exclusion, entry point sealing — the full package.
Signs of a Rodent Infestation
If you’re reading this page, you probably already suspect something. Here’s how to confirm it:
- Droppings. Small, dark, rice-shaped pellets mean mice. Larger, capsule-shaped droppings mean rats. The most common places: under the kitchen sink, behind the stove, inside pantries, along garage walls, and in the attic.
- Noises in walls and ceilings. Scratching, tapping, or scurrying after dark. Mice are especially active at night and often run along wall studs and ceiling joists.
- Chewed materials. Food packaging with holes, gnawed wood, shredded cardboard or paper, damaged weatherstripping. Mice chew constantly — their teeth never stop growing.
- Grease trails. Rodents run the same routes every night. Their fur deposits oily residue along baseboards, pipes, and structural members. Dark smudge marks along a wall are a telltale sign.
- A musty or ammonia-like odor. Concentrated rodent urine has a distinct smell. In heavy infestations, you’ll notice it in enclosed spaces like closets, crawl spaces, or attics.
Why Rodents Are a Problem in Kansas City
Kansas City’s climate is the primary driver. Summers are hot and humid. Winters get legitimately cold. That seasonal swing pushes mice and rats indoors starting in September and October, right when temperatures begin to drop. Every heated building in the metro becomes a potential target.
The city’s housing diversity plays a role too. Older homes in areas like Brookside, Waldo, and the West Bottoms have aged foundations, original siding, and decades-old utility penetrations — all of which develop gaps over time. Newer homes in the suburbs develop entry points as materials settle and shrink. Builder-grade foam sealant and cheap weatherstripping deteriorate within a few years.
Kansas City’s commercial corridors, restaurant districts, and industrial areas support high rodent populations that radiate into surrounding neighborhoods. Rats are more common near the river, the West Bottoms, and densely developed commercial zones. Mice are everywhere.
Norway rats — the large, burrowing species — are well-established in parts of the metro. They dig along foundations, under slabs, and near trash enclosures. Roof rats, while less common, do show up in certain areas. House mice are by far the most frequent rodent pest in KC homes.
Our Rodent Control Process
We use a three-phase approach that addresses the current problem and prevents it from recurring.
Phase 1: assessment. We conduct a thorough assessment of the home’s interior and exterior. Every foundation crack, pipe penetration, vent opening, garage door seal, and roofline gap gets evaluated. We identify active entry points, travel paths, nesting areas, and the species involved.
Phase 2: Trapping and removal. Professional snap traps, strategically placed along confirmed travel routes. Placement matters more than quantity. We service traps on a scheduled basis and adjust our strategy based on what we’re catching — and where.
Phase 3: Exclusion. We seal every identified entry point using rodent-proof materials: stainless steel wool, metal flashing, hardware cloth, and commercial-grade sealants. This is the step that makes the difference between a temporary fix and a lasting solution. If you don’t close the doors, new mice walk right in.
For rat infestations, we may also recommend exterior bait stations as part of a population reduction strategy, particularly for properties with persistent Norway rat pressure.
What Rodents Cost You
Beyond the obvious disgust factor, rodents cause real damage.
They chew electrical wiring — a known fire hazard. They destroy attic insulation with nesting, tunneling, and waste accumulation. They contaminate food and surfaces with droppings and urine that carry hantavirus, salmonella, and leptospirosis. They bring fleas and mites into your home. And they reproduce at an alarming rate: a single pair of mice can produce over 60 offspring in a year under favorable conditions.
Ignoring a rodent problem doesn’t make it go away. It makes it worse. And more expensive to fix.
