• Gnaw marks. Rodents chew constantly — their teeth never stop growing. Look for teeth marks on food packaging, wood trim, plastic containers, and electrical wiring. Chewed wires are a genuine fire hazard that insurance companies take seriously.
• Scratching sounds. Hearing something in the walls or ceiling at night? That’s almost certainly mice or rats moving through your home’s framing. They travel along pipes, wires, and joists, and they’re more active between dusk and dawn.
• Nesting material. Shredded paper, insulation, fabric, or cardboard tucked into a hidden corner means rodents are setting up house. Common nesting sites include behind appliances, inside stored boxes, in attic insulation, and behind wall panels.
• Grease marks. Rats especially leave dark, oily rub marks along walls and baseboards where they travel repeatedly. These marks build up over time and can be a useful indicator of traffic patterns.

If you’re seeing droppings in multiple rooms, the problem is bigger than you think. Mice can fit through a hole the size of a dime. Rats need about a quarter-sized gap. Your house has more of those than you’d expect.
