Living in rural and semi-rural western Iowa means living with rodent pressure — especially in fall. As temperatures drop, house mice push into structures aggressively. Agricultural areas surrounding Missouri Valley support large rodent populations that move into homes when field harvest disrupts their habitat. Norway rats are present near waterways and in areas with accessible food sources. Rodents chew through wiring, damage insulation, contaminate food, and carry disease.
Miller Pest Solutions provides professional rodent control for Missouri Valley homes and properties. We use trapping, baiting, and exclusion — the complete approach.
Signs of a Rodent Infestation
- Droppings — found in cabinets, under sinks, in the pantry, along baseboards, in the attic, or anywhere food is stored or rodents travel. Mouse droppings are small and pointed; rat droppings are larger and blunt-ended.
- Gnaw marks — on food packaging, wood trim, wiring insulation, pipe insulation, and structural materials. Fresh gnaw marks are light-colored; older marks are darker.
- Sounds at night — scratching, scurrying, and squeaking from inside walls, ceilings, or crawl spaces.
- Nesting material — shredded insulation, paper, fabric, or plant material gathered in concealed areas.
- Tracks or runways — rodents follow the same paths repeatedly, leaving grease marks along baseboards and in dusty areas.
Why Rodents Are Common in Missouri Valley
Missouri Valley is agricultural country. Corn and soybean fields surrounding the town support large populations of field mice and rats. Fall harvest disrupts rodent habitat — when crops come out of the fields, rodents move into adjacent structures in large numbers. This is the heaviest rodent pressure period of the year, and it happens every fall without fail in Harrison County.
The Missouri River provides additional rodent habitat, particularly for Norway rats. Older homes with aging foundations, crawl spaces, and gaps around utility entries give rodents easy access to heated structures.
Our Rodent Control Process
- assessment — We identify active areas, entry points, and nesting locations before setting any control measures.
- Interior trapping and baiting — Snap traps, glue boards, and/or bait stations placed in active areas to eliminate the existing population.
- Exterior bait stations — Tamper-resistant bait stations at the perimeter intercept rodents before they enter.
- Exclusion — Sealing entry points is the most important long-term step. We identify gaps, recommend repairs, and where included in the service, seal critical entry points directly.
