Mice don’t knock. They squeeze through gaps the size of a dime and set up camp in your walls, attic, and kitchen cabinets before you ever know they’re there. By the time you hear scratching at night or find droppings in a drawer, there’s usually an established family — or several. And in Nevada, IA, rodent pressure ramps up every single fall like clockwork when temperatures drop and field mice abandon harvested crops for the warmth of your home.

Miller Pest Solutions has been keeping rodents out of central Iowa homes and businesses since 2001. We trap, we exclude, and we solve the actual problem — not just treat the symptoms while mice keep pouring in through the same holes.

Signs of a Rodent Infestation

  • Droppings: Mouse droppings are small, dark, and pellet-shaped — roughly the size of a grain of rice. Rat droppings are significantly larger, about half an inch long with blunt ends. Check under sinks, inside cabinets, along baseboards, behind the stove, in the garage, and around pet food storage. Fresh droppings are dark and shiny; old ones are gray and crumbly.
  • Scratching or scurrying sounds: Especially at night when the house is quiet. Mice and rats are nocturnal and most active between dusk and dawn. Sounds in walls, ceilings, and attic spaces are extremely common indicators — that light scratching or rapid scurrying directly overhead is almost always mice.
  • Gnaw marks: Chewed food packaging, gnawed electrical wires, teeth marks on wood, plastic, and even aluminum. Rodents gnaw constantly to keep their continuously growing incisors worn down. Chewed wiring is a genuine fire hazard — rodents cause an estimated 20-25% of undetermined house fires in the U.S.
  • Grease marks (rub marks): Rats in particular leave dark, oily smudges along walls, baseboards, and pipes where they travel the same routes repeatedly. Their fur deposits body oils that stain surfaces over time.
  • Nesting material: Shredded paper, insulation, fabric, cardboard, and plant material bunched together in hidden spots — inside wall voids, behind appliances, in stored boxes, beneath insulation in the attic. If you find a nest, the mice are already well established.

Why Rodents Are Common in Nevada, IA

Nevada is surrounded by prime mouse habitat. Story County’s corn and soybean fields support massive mouse and vole populations all summer long. These mice live and breed in the fields with nearly unlimited food. Then harvest time arrives. The crops disappear, cover is gone, and the first cold nights of fall send those field mice migrating toward structures in waves. Houses, garages, sheds, barns, commercial buildings. Anything with warmth, shelter, and something to eat.

This annual fall migration hits Nevada hard. The town’s older homes near downtown are especially vulnerable — aging foundations with cracks and gaps, utility lines entering through unsealed holes, deteriorated weatherstripping, and open soffits all provide easy entry points. But newer homes aren’t safe either. Mice can squeeze through a gap as small as a quarter inch. If your garage door doesn’t seal flush with the concrete or your dryer vent cover is missing, that’s an open invitation.

Once inside, mice don’t leave voluntarily. They’ll nest in wall insulation, attic insulation, under kitchen cabinets, and behind appliances. A single pair of mice can produce 60+ offspring in a year. The problem compounds fast if entry points aren’t sealed.

Rats are less common than mice in Nevada but do show up — especially Norway rats near older commercial structures, restaurants, properties with bird feeders, and homes where pet food or garbage is accessible outdoors.

Our Rodent Control Process

assessment & Entry Point Identification: This is the most important step. We inspect the entire interior and exterior of your home to find where rodents are getting in. Foundation gaps, pipe penetrations, roof-soffit junctions, garage door seals, dryer vents, A/C line entries, weep holes — we check every known vulnerability. You can’t solve a rodent problem without knowing where they’re entering.

Trapping Program: We place professional snap traps in strategic locations based on rodent activity patterns — droppings, rub marks, and gnaw evidence tell us exactly where to set up. Trapping is the fastest, most humane way to reduce an active indoor population. We monitor and service traps on a regular schedule until activity ceases.

Exclusion: This is what separates professional rodent control from just killing the mice you have today while new ones move in tomorrow. We seal gaps, cracks, and openings with appropriate materials — steel wool, copper mesh, caulk, hardware cloth, and metal flashing — to physically prevent rodents from re-entering the structure. Exclusion is the only permanent fix.

Sanitation & Prevention Guidance: We help you identify conditions that attract and sustain rodents — food storage issues, clutter providing nesting sites, exterior habitat like overgrown vegetation against the foundation, bird feeders, and pet food left outside. Practical changes make a real difference in reducing ongoing rodent pressure.
