Mice and rats have been getting into Prairie Village homes for as long as the neighborhood has existed. That’s not an exaggeration — the 1940s-60s construction that defines this area was never built to be rodent-proof. Settling foundations, aging siding, gaps around utility lines, and unscreened vents all create entry points that mice exploit easily. A mouse only needs a gap the size of a dime.
Miller Pest Solutions provides rodent control across Prairie Village and the Kansas City metro. We’ve been solving rodent problems since 2007, and we focus on what actually works: eliminating the rodents inside and closing off the ways they’re getting in.
Signs of a Rodent Infestation
Rodents are mostly active at night, so you’ll often notice signs before you ever see one:
- Droppings. Mouse droppings are small, dark, and pellet-shaped — about the size of a grain of rice. Rat droppings are larger, roughly 1/2 to 3/4 inch. Check under sinks, in pantries, along baseboards, and in the attic or basement.
- Scratching or scurrying sounds. Hearing noises in the walls, ceiling, or attic — especially at night — is a strong indicator. Mice are surprisingly loud for their size.
- Gnaw marks. Rodents chew constantly. Look for gnaw marks on food packaging, wood trim, electrical wiring, and even plastic pipes. Chewed wiring is a legitimate fire hazard.
- Grease marks along walls. Mice and rats follow the same paths repeatedly, leaving dark smudge marks along baseboards and around entry holes from the oils in their fur.
- Nesting material. Shredded paper, insulation, fabric, or plant material piled in hidden areas — behind appliances, in storage boxes, inside wall cavities — means rodents are nesting.
Why Rodents Are Common in Prairie Village
Three things make Prairie Village a hotspot for rodent activity: old homes, mature landscaping, and dense development.
The homes here have had decades to settle, shift, and develop gaps. Foundation cracks, deteriorating mortar, gaps where additions were joined to original structures, and older garage doors that don’t seal tightly all create entry points. Original plumbing and HVAC penetrations often lack proper sealing. Many homes have crawl spaces or unfinished basements that give rodents easy access to the building envelope.
Outside, the mature trees and established landscaping provide food and shelter. Acorns from oak trees, seeds from ornamental plants, birdfeeders, vegetable gardens, and compost bins all attract rodents. Dense ground cover and ivy — popular in Prairie Village yards — give mice and rats covered runways right up to the foundation.
The neighborhood’s density matters too. Homes are close together with shared fence lines and connected vegetation. When one property has rodents, neighbors often do too. It’s not anyone’s fault — it’s just how older, established neighborhoods work.
Our Rodent Control Process
Trapping alone doesn’t solve a rodent problem. If the entry points stay open, new mice and rats will move in. Our approach addresses both sides of the equation.
assessment. We thoroughly inspect your home — interior, exterior, attic, basement or crawl space, and garage. We identify active entry points, nesting sites, and the extent of the infestation. We’ll show you exactly where and how rodents are getting in.
Trapping and removal. We set professional traps in strategic locations based on rodent activity patterns. We use the right type of trap in the right place — this makes a big difference in results. We check and service traps on a schedule until activity stops.
Exclusion. This is the most important step. We seal the entry points rodents are using — gaps around pipes, cracks in the foundation, openings at the roofline, and other vulnerabilities. We use materials rodents can’t chew through: steel wool, metal flashing, hardware cloth, and commercial-grade sealants. Without exclusion, you’re just trapping the same problem on repeat.
Sanitation recommendations. We’ll advise on changes that reduce rodent attractants — securing trash, relocating birdfeeders, trimming vegetation away from the foundation, and storing food properly. Small changes make a big difference in long-term rodent pressure.
Why Choose Miller Pest Solutions
Rodent control requires patience and attention to detail. You need someone who will crawl around your foundation, get into the attic, and actually find every entry point — not just throw bait stations in the yard and call it done.
Joel Miller started Miller Pest Solutions in 2007 with that kind of hands-on approach, and it hasn’t changed. We’re NPMA members and QualityPro Certified. We know Prairie Village homes because we’ve worked in hundreds of them. We understand where these older houses leak and how to close them up.
