Sac spiders don’t get the notoriety of black widows or brown recluses, but they’re responsible for more spider bites inside American homes than any other species. They’re small, pale, and active — hunting at night along walls and ceilings rather than waiting in a web. If you wake up with an unexplained bite and find a small yellowish spider nearby, you’ve probably met a sac spider. Here’s what to know about identifying them, understanding their behavior, and deciding when to get professional help.

Identification

Yellow sac spiders (Cheiracanthium species, most commonly C. inclusum or C. mildei) are 1/4 to 3/8 inch long with pale yellow to beige coloring and a slightly darker stripe along the top of the abdomen. Legs are long relative to body size. Unlike web-building spiders, sac spiders don’t have a distinctive web pattern — instead, they build a small, flattened silk sac (hence the name) where they rest during the day. These sacs are typically found in the upper corners of rooms, between the wall and ceiling, behind picture frames, and inside rolled window blinds.

Behavior: Why They Bite More Often

Sac spiders are active hunters that roam at night seeking prey. This behavior brings them into contact with sleeping humans — they may wander across skin or get caught between a person and bedding, resulting in a defensive bite. They’re not aggressive, but they will bite when they feel threatened or trapped. Their behavior contrasts sharply with sedentary web-builders that wait in a fixed location.

What a Sac Spider Bite Looks Like

Sac spider bites cause initial sharp pain (sometimes described as a bee sting) followed by redness and swelling at the bite site. Some people develop a small blister or hardened area. Symptoms are typically localized and resolve within a few days. Sac spider bites are not considered medically significant in the same category as widow or recluse bites, though individual reactions vary. Systemic symptoms are uncommon.

Where to Look for Sac Spiders

  • Upper wall-ceiling junctions in bedrooms, living rooms, and kitchens
  • Behind pictures, mirrors, and wall hangings
  • Inside window blinds that are rolled up during the day
  • Under furniture, especially on upper surfaces out of plain sight
  • In garages and storage areas

Prevention

  • Reduce insect populations that sac spiders feed on (general pest control helps)
  • Seal gaps around windows and exterior penetrations
  • Reduce exterior lighting that attracts prey insects
  • Check bedding before getting in and shake out clothing left on the floor
  • Regular vacuuming of upper corners and behind furniture disrupts sac locations

Professional spider control

Because sac spiders are active hunters rather than web-builders, residual insecticide treatments applied to surfaces where they travel (baseboards, window frames, ceilings) are effective.
