Most spiders in Des Moines aren’t dangerous. But that’s not particularly comforting when you’re finding them in your basement, your garage, or — worse — your kids’ bedroom. Spiders move indoors when conditions are right, and central Iowa’s climate drives them inside in force each fall. Beyond the nuisance factor, a heavy spider presence often signals a larger insect problem, since spiders go where the food is.
Miller Pest Solutions provides spider control services throughout Des Moines and the surrounding metro. We treat the spider issue directly and address the underlying prey insect activity that’s drawing them in — because a single treatment without tackling the root cause is a short-term fix at best.
Signs of a Spider Infestation
Spiders aren’t always obvious. Here’s what to look for:
- Webs in corners, along ceiling lines, or in basement areas — cobweb-style webs belong to cellar spiders and cobweb spiders; funnel webs indicate grass or funnel weavers; orb weavers build round webs outdoors near lights
- Egg sacs — small, silky sacs attached to webs or hidden in crevices. One egg sac can contain dozens to hundreds of eggs
- Frequent sightings of live spiders — especially ground-hunting species like wolf spiders, which don’t build webs and are often mistaken for something more dangerous
- Dark, undisturbed areas with heavy webbing — storage rooms, crawlspaces, and garages are prime harborage
- brown recluse signs — flat, irregular webs in dark, dry areas like cardboard boxes, behind stored items, or in wall voids. The spider itself has a violin-shaped marking on its back
Why Spiders Are Common in Des Moines
Iowa’s warm summers produce heavy insect populations — and spiders follow. The fall migration indoors is something almost every Des Moines homeowner notices: wolf spiders pushing in through gaps in foundations, cellar spiders multiplying in basements, and the occasional brown recluse turning up in an undisturbed corner of a garage or storage area.
Brown recluse spiders deserve special attention. They’re present in Iowa and are one of the few spider species in the state with a medically significant bite. They don’t seek out humans, but they will bite defensively when disturbed — tucked into clothing, bedding, or boxes that haven’t been moved in a while. Older homes in Des Moines with cluttered basements, attached garages, or crawlspaces provide exactly the kind of dark, dry harborage brown recluses prefer.
The agricultural landscape surrounding Des Moines also contributes. Post-harvest in the fall, insect populations that were living in field crops start moving. That drives spider activity, and both end up heading toward structures.
Our Spider Control Process
Effective spider control is really two-part: treat the spiders and treat their food source.
For the spiders themselves, we use residual insecticide applications along the exterior perimeter — foundation, eaves, entry points — and targeted interior treatments in harborage areas. We also knock down existing webs as part of service. Active webs can reactivate even after treatment if egg sacs aren’t addressed, so physical removal matters.
For the underlying pest pressure driving spider activity, we assess and treat the insect population — whether that’s springtails in a damp basement, crickets coming in from outside, or general fall invader activity. Reducing the food source makes your home less attractive to spiders long-term.
For homes with brown recluse activity, we take additional steps: targeted interior treatments, glue board monitoring in harborage areas, and guidance on exclusion and clutter reduction to eliminate harborage sites.
