Most spiders in Independence are harmless. They eat other bugs, stay out of sight, and mind their own business. But when brown recluse spiders start showing up in your closets, or wolf spiders keep appearing in the basement, “harmless” stops being the right word. Especially when you’ve got kids crawling around on the floor.
Independence homes — particularly the older ones near the historic district and the Truman neighborhoods — tend to have the kind of undisturbed spaces spiders love. Basements, attics, storage closets, crawl spaces. Add in Kansas City’s bug-heavy summers, and you’ve got a reliable food source that keeps spiders coming back.
Miller Pest Solutions has been removing spiders from Kansas City homes since 2001. We focus on the species that matter and the conditions that attract them.
Signs of a Spider Problem
- Frequent sightings — Seeing one spider a month is normal. Seeing several a week? That means a population has established itself in or around your home.
- Webs in corners and storage areas — Cobwebs in undisturbed corners, garages, and basements indicate active spider harborage. Different web types point to different species.
- Brown recluse sightings — A light brown spider with a dark violin-shaped mark on its back. They hide in boxes, behind furniture, inside shoes, and in closets. If you’ve seen one, there are almost certainly more.
- Egg sacs — Small, silky white or tan balls tucked into corners or attached to webs. Each sac can contain dozens to hundreds of spiderlings.
- Other insect activity — Spiders go where the food is. A spike in spider numbers usually signals a larger pest issue — flies, ants, or other insects attracting them.
Why Spiders Are Common in Independence
Geography and housing stock both play a role. Independence sits in the western Missouri climate zone — warm, humid summers with mild falls that keep insect populations active well into October. More bugs means more spiders.
The city’s older homes are especially attractive to brown recluse spiders. These spiders thrive in cluttered, undisturbed areas — cardboard boxes in basements, packed storage rooms, rarely-used closets. Homes with stone foundations, unfinished basements, or attached garages provide easy access and plenty of hiding spots.
Common species in Independence include brown recluse, wolf spiders, cellar spiders (the long-legged ones in your basement), and various orb weavers building webs around exterior lights. The brown recluse is the one that matters most from a health standpoint — their bites can cause tissue damage and require medical attention.
Wolf spiders are large and fast but not medically significant. They don’t build webs — they hunt on the ground and frequently end up in basements, garages, and ground-level rooms. They’re startling but not dangerous. Still, when you’re finding several a week, it’s a sign that insect prey populations around your home are high, and a perimeter treatment makes sense.
Our Spider Control Process
Killing individual spiders doesn’t solve a spider problem. You have to address why they’re there in the first place.
Thorough assessment. We check interior and exterior harborage areas — basements, crawl spaces, attics, garages, eaves, window frames, and landscaping near the foundation. We identify species and assess the scope of the problem.
Interior treatment. We apply residual products to cracks, crevices, and known harborage areas. For brown recluse, we focus on the undisturbed zones they prefer — closet corners, behind furniture, storage areas, and utility spaces. Sticky traps are placed strategically to monitor activity levels.
Exterior barrier treatment. We treat the foundation perimeter, eaves, window and door frames, and common web-building sites. This reduces the insect prey base around your home and intercepts spiders before they move inside.
Web removal. Knocking down webs disrupts spider behavior and forces them into contact with treated surfaces. We remove accessible webs during service.
Habitat recommendations. We’ll advise on simple changes — reducing clutter in storage areas, sealing gaps around doors and pipes, switching to yellow exterior bulbs that attract fewer insects, and trimming vegetation away from the house.
