Spiders are part of life in Iowa. But when they’re building webs across every corner of your garage, dropping down from your bathroom ceiling, or filling your basement window wells, it’s time to do something about it. Johnston homeowners deal with spider issues regularly — especially from late spring through fall.

Miller Pest Solutions has been keeping Des Moines-area homes spider-free since 2001. We don’t just knock down webs. We target the conditions that bring spiders in and keep them coming back.

Signs of a Spider Problem

A spider or two is normal. A pattern is not. Here’s when it crosses the line from occasional visitor to actual problem:

  • Webs everywhere — Cobwebs accumulating in corners, along eaves, in garage door frames, and around light fixtures faster than you can clean them.
  • Spiders in living spaces — Finding spiders regularly in bedrooms, bathrooms, or kitchens means they’ve moved beyond the basement and garage.
  • Egg sacs — Small, white or tan silk balls tucked into corners, under furniture, or in storage areas. Each one can contain hundreds of spiderlings.
  • Large numbers of other insects — Spiders go where the food is. If you’re seeing a lot of flies, gnats, or other bugs inside, spiders will follow.
  • brown recluse sightings — Iowa is on the northern edge of brown recluse range. If you spot a tan-brown spider with a dark violin shape on its back, don’t ignore it. Brown recluse bites can cause serious tissue damage.

Why Spiders Are Common in Johnston

Johnston’s suburban setting — with plenty of trees, landscaping, and green space near Beaver Creek and Terra Park — supports healthy insect populations. That means lots of food for spiders.

The homes along NW 62nd Avenue, Pioneer Parkway, and the newer developments off NW Beaver Drive tend to have attached garages, finished basements, and exterior lighting that attracts flying insects at night. Spiders set up shop near those lights because the hunting is easy.

Iowa’s seasonal swings also drive spiders indoors. When temperatures drop in fall, spiders seek shelter in basements, crawl spaces, and wall voids. Wolf spiders, house spiders, and cellar spiders are the most common invaders. By winter, they’re established inside and reproducing.

Mulch beds and rock landscaping right against foundations — common in Johnston neighborhoods — give spiders harborage within inches of your exterior walls. They find gaps around utility penetrations, dryer vents, and window frames and move right in.

Our Spider Control Process

Spider control is really about two things: removing the spiders you have and eliminating the prey insects that attract them. We address both.

Web removal and assessment: We knock down existing webs and egg sacs around your home’s exterior — eaves, soffits, window frames, light fixtures, and garage door frames. During assessment, we identify entry points and problem areas.

Exterior perimeter treatment: We apply a residual barrier around your home’s foundation, entry points, and exterior surfaces where spiders and their prey are active. This creates a kill zone that reduces both spider and insect activity around your home.

Interior treatment: When spiders are active inside, we treat baseboards, window frames, closets, storage areas, and other harborage zones. For brown recluse concerns, we use sticky traps to monitor activity levels and targeted dust applications in wall voids.

Ongoing prevention: Most of our Johnston customers are on a quarterly service plan. Regular treatments throughout the year keep spider populations low by consistently reducing the insect prey base around your home. It’s the most effective approach long-term.
