Spiders are part of life in Kansas. Most are harmless — even helpful, since they eat other insects. But when you’re finding brown recluse spiders in your closets, wolf spiders in your basement, or webs covering every corner of your garage, helpful isn’t the word that comes to mind. And brown recluse bites can cause serious medical issues. That’s not a pest you want to coexist with.
Miller Pest Solutions has been managing spider problems across the Kansas City metro since 2001. We reduce spider populations, target dangerous species, and treat the conditions that bring them inside.
Signs of a Spider Infestation
- Webs in corners, closets, and basements. Different species build different webs. Cobweb spiders create messy, irregular webs in undisturbed areas. Brown recluse spiders build small, loose webs at ground level in dark spaces.
- Spiders in shoes, clothing, or bedding. Brown recluse spiders are attracted to undisturbed items. Shoes left in closets, stored clothing, and boxes in garages are common hiding spots.
- Egg sacs. Spider egg sacs look like small, silky balls — usually white or tan. A single egg sac can contain hundreds of spiderlings.
- Frequent sightings of large spiders. Seeing wolf spiders, cellar spiders, or brown recluse spiders regularly — especially indoors — indicates a population that’s established, not just passing through.
- An abundance of other insects. Spiders go where the food is. If you’re seeing lots of flies, gnats, or other small insects indoors, spiders will follow.
Why Spiders Are Common in Lenexa
Lenexa sits in the heart of brown recluse territory. Eastern Kansas has one of the highest brown recluse populations in the country. These spiders thrive in the attics, basements, garages, and storage areas that every Lenexa home has. They prefer quiet, undisturbed spaces — and homes near wooded areas like Shawnee Mission Park and Black Hoof Park have especially high pressure.
The warm Kansas summers push insect populations up, which in turn supports larger spider populations. Fall triggers a migration indoors as temperatures drop and spiders seek shelter. Homes along the tree-lined streets of older Lenexa neighborhoods tend to see the most spider activity because of the surrounding habitat.
Construction and development along K-10 and City Center also plays a role. Disturbing natural habitat displaces spiders, and new buildings with gaps in weatherstripping and unfinished garage spaces become quick targets.
Our Spider Control Process
Spider control starts with reducing the prey insects that attract them. Our exterior treatments create a barrier around your home that knocks down flying and crawling insects — cutting off the spiders’ food supply.
Inside, we treat baseboards, closets, attic spaces, basements, and storage areas where spiders harbor. For brown recluse problems, we use sticky traps to monitor population levels and targeted applications in the dark, undisturbed spaces they prefer. De-webbing exterior eaves, windows, and entry points is part of every service.
We also identify and seal common entry points. Gaps under doors, cracks around utility penetrations, and broken weather stripping let spiders walk right in. Addressing these makes our treatments last longer and reduces reinfestation.
