- Webs everywhere. Corners of rooms, window frames, basement rafters, eaves, garage ceilings — webs accumulating faster than you can knock them down.
- Egg sacs. Small, silk-wrapped balls in sheltered areas. A single egg sac can hold hundreds of spiderlings.
- Frequent sightings. Seeing spiders regularly, especially in living spaces, means the population is established.
- Other insect activity. Lots of flies, gnats, or other bugs inside? That’s a food buffet for spiders, and they’ll follow the prey.
Why Spiders Are Common in New Virginia
New Virginia sits in Warren County surrounded by agricultural land, timber, and open fields. That’s spider habitat. Common species in this area include wolf spiders, jumping spiders, cellar spiders, and the occasional brown recluse — the one you actually need to worry about.
Wolf spiders are especially common in rural Iowa. They’re large, fast, and ground-dwelling. They don’t build webs — they hunt. And they’ll wander into your home through gaps under doors, cracks in foundations, and garage entries, particularly in fall when temperatures drop.
