Most spiders that show up in Omaha homes are nuisance pests — they’re not going to hurt anyone, but that doesn’t mean you want them building webs in your basement corners or dropping from the ceiling above your bed. A handful of species in the area, though, do warrant real caution. The brown recluse is present in Nebraska, and the northern black widow has been documented in the state. Knowing what you’re dealing with matters.
Signs of a Spider Infestation
Spiders aren’t social insects — they don’t form colonies in the traditional sense. But when conditions are right, they can become very numerous very fast. Here’s what to watch for:
- Webs throughout the structure — Cobweb spiders and common house spiders build irregular webs in corners, along ceiling edges, in basement rafters, behind furniture, and in rarely disturbed storage areas. A lot of webs means a lot of spiders.
- Egg sacs — Silky, round sacs attached to webs or tucked in crevices. A single egg sac can contain hundreds of eggs. Finding multiple sacs means a significant population is developing.
- Live spiders in living areas — Occasional spiders wandering through are normal. Seeing multiple spiders per week in living spaces suggests a heavier-than-normal population or a prey insect problem drawing them in.
- Concentrated activity in dark, undisturbed areas — Basements, crawlspaces, garages, attics, and storage rooms. Spiders prefer low-traffic areas with available prey.
Why Spiders Are Common in Omaha
Spiders follow their food. Omaha’s pest insect population — flies, gnats, mosquitoes, ants, and others — supports a robust spider population. A home with significant insect activity will attract more spiders than one without. Older homes with more exterior gaps, wood piles against the foundation, dense foundation plantings, and moisture issues provide excellent harborage and hunting grounds.
Fall brings a noticeable uptick in spider activity. As temperatures drop, spiders seek warmer, sheltered areas — often inside homes. Mature female spiders also become more visible in late summer and fall as they move in search of mates or egg-laying sites.
Brown recluse spiders are present in Nebraska, though less common than in states further south. They prefer undisturbed areas — cardboard boxes, stored clothing, wall voids, basements — and are rarely encountered in active living spaces. They are, however, venomous, and a bite can cause significant tissue damage. If you’re finding spiders in your home and aren’t sure what species they are, it’s worth having a professional take a look.
Our Spider Control Process
Effective spider control addresses two things simultaneously: the spiders themselves and the insect prey supporting them. A perimeter treatment that knocks down existing spiders but leaves their food source intact is going to have limited long-term impact.
We treat exterior entry points, foundation areas, eaves, and the areas around windows and doors where spiders commonly enter and build. Interior treatments focus on basement and crawlspace areas, wall-floor junctions, and storage spaces. We also knock down existing webs and egg sacs as part of the service — leaving webs in place gives surviving spiders shelter and breeding sites.
For properties with persistent spider pressure, seasonal or recurring service maintains control through the peak activity periods in late summer and fall. We’ll recommend what makes sense based on what we find during the assessment.
