Finding a spider in your house is one thing. Finding brown recluse spiders on a regular basis is something else entirely. Shawnee, Kansas sits in the middle of prime brown recluse habitat, and homes here — especially older ones with basements, attics, and attached garages — can harbor significant populations. These aren’t spiders you ignore. Their bites can cause tissue damage that takes weeks or months to heal.

Miller Pest Solutions has been handling spider problems in the Kansas City metro since 2001. We take brown recluse control seriously, and we know what it takes to reduce their numbers in your home.

Signs of a Spider Infestation

  • Frequent spider sightings indoors. One spider now and then is normal. Seeing them regularly — especially brown recluse or wolf spiders — means there’s a breeding population in or around your home.
  • Webs in undisturbed areas. Brown recluse spiders build loose, irregular webs close to the ground in basements, closets, garages, and storage areas. Cobweb spiders build messy webs in upper corners and light fixtures.
  • Spiders in stored items. If you’re pulling spiders out of boxes, shoes, folded clothes, or rarely-used cabinets, they’ve established themselves in your home’s quiet spaces. Brown recluse spiders are especially drawn to cluttered storage.
  • Egg sacs in hidden locations. Small, round, white or off-white silk sacs in basements, crawl spaces, and closets. Each one can release dozens to hundreds of spiderlings.
  • Other pest activity. Spiders eat insects. A high spider population usually means a high insect population — flies, crickets, ants — that’s sustaining them.

Why Spiders Are Common in Shawnee

Eastern Kansas is one of the densest brown recluse habitats in the United States. This isn’t an occasional pest here — it’s endemic. Shawnee’s housing stock ranges from 1950s-era ranches near downtown to newer builds west of Woodland Road. Older homes with stone foundations, unfinished basements, and detached garages provide endless harborage. But newer homes aren’t immune. Spiders enter through garage doors, utility penetrations, and gaps in weatherstripping.

The wooded areas along Turkey Creek and near Shawnee Mission Park create natural spider habitat right next to residential areas. Wolf spiders, grass spiders, and funnel weavers live in the leaf litter and ground cover, then move toward homes as temperatures change in fall.

Shawnee’s hot summers drive insect populations up, which feeds spider populations. By late summer and early fall, spider numbers peak. That’s when most homeowners realize they have a problem — seeing large spiders inside nightly as they move around looking for mates.

Our Spider Control Process

Effective spider control requires more than spraying baseboards. We start by treating the exterior of your home — foundation, eaves, window frames, door frames, and any cracks or gaps. This kills the insects that spiders feed on and creates a barrier that reduces spider entry.

Inside, we target the areas where spiders actually live: basements, crawl spaces, closets, garages, attics, and utility rooms. For brown recluse, we deploy sticky monitoring traps in key locations. These traps do double duty — they capture spiders and help us measure the population so we know if our treatment is working.

De-webbing is part of every service. Removing webs forces spiders to rebuild in treated areas, increasing their exposure to our products. We also identify entry points and recommend sealing measures to limit new spider access.

Brown recluse reduction is a process, not a one-time event. These spiders can survive months without food and they hide deep in wall voids and clutter. Ongoing treatment — typically quarterly — is the most effective approach for homes with established brown recluse populations.
