A few spiders in the garage or basement is normal. But when webs are multiplying, spiders are showing up in living areas regularly, or you’re finding potentially dangerous species indoors, it’s time to do something about it. Treynor has a full complement of common Midwestern spiders — most harmless, some not.
Signs of a Spider Problem
- Abundant webs — in corners, along ceilings, in basement window wells, in garages and sheds
- Frequent sightings — spiders appearing regularly in living areas, especially bedrooms and bathrooms
- Egg sacs — papery silk sacs attached to webs or tucked in corners — each can contain dozens to hundreds of eggs
- brown recluse sightings — flat, brown spiders with a violin-shaped marking on the cephalothorax; found in dark, undisturbed areas
- Black widow sightings — glossy black spiders with a red hourglass on the underside; typically found in woodpiles, under decks, and in undisturbed low areas
Why Spiders Are Common in Treynor
Spiders follow their food supply — insects. Properties with high insect pressure naturally attract more spiders. Treynor’s mix of rural surroundings, wooded areas, creek bottoms, and older housing stock with plenty of cracks and gaps gives spiders exactly what they want: insect-rich environments and easy access inside.
Brown recluse spiders are a legitimate concern in southwestern Iowa. They prefer undisturbed spaces — attic insulation, stored boxes, cluttered closets, and crawl spaces. They don’t seek out humans, but they will bite defensively if accidentally pressed against skin.
Our Spider Control Process
Miller Pest Solutions addresses spider problems by treating both the spiders and the insect populations that draw them:
- Exterior perimeter treatment — Residual insecticide applied around the foundation, eaves, window frames, and entry points to reduce spider harborage and entry
- Web removal — Removing webs eliminates egg sacs and discourages spiders from re-establishing in treated areas
- Interior crack-and-crevice treatment — Targeting areas where spiders hide: basements, closets, utility rooms, crawl spaces
- Glue boards — Useful for monitoring brown recluse activity and reducing population in specific areas
- General pest reduction — Reducing the insect population around your home reduces spider food supply
