Spiders go where the food is. If your Urbandale home has spiders, it also has the insects they’re hunting — and that’s the real problem to solve. Most spiders in iowa are harmless, but brown recluse spiders do exist in the state, and nobody enjoys walking through webs in their basement or finding wolf spiders the size of a quarter sprinting across the living room floor.
Miller Pest Solutions takes a practical approach to spider control — reduce the prey insects, treat the harborage areas, and knock the spider population down to where you’re not constantly encountering them. We’ve been doing this across the Des Moines metro since 2001.
Signs of a Spider Problem
Spiders are reclusive by nature. Seeing a few isn’t unusual. But when you’re seeing them regularly, it points to a larger insect issue and conditions that favor spider populations:
- Frequent spider sightings. Finding spiders in your home weekly — in basements, bathrooms, garages, closets, or living areas. Consistency matters more than individual sightings.
- Webs everywhere. Cobwebs accumulating in corners, along ceiling lines, in window frames, basement joists, and around exterior light fixtures. Different species build different web types — messy cobwebs (house spiders) versus organized orb webs (garden spiders).
- Egg sacs. Small, round, silken balls found in webs, behind furniture, or in undisturbed areas. Each sac can contain dozens to hundreds of eggs depending on the species. Finding these means the population is reproducing in your home.
- High insect activity. Lots of flies, gnats, moths, or other small insects in and around your home. Spiders are predators — abundant prey means abundant spiders.
- Brown recluse indicators. Light brown spiders with a violin-shaped marking on the back, typically found in storage areas, boxes, clothing left undisturbed, and behind wall hangings. If you suspect brown recluse, call us. They’re medically significant.
Why Spiders Are Common in Urbandale
Iowa’s seasons practically guarantee spider encounters. Spring and summer bring explosions of insect populations — flies, mosquitoes, moths, beetles — that draw spiders in to feed. Fall pushes spiders indoors as temperatures drop and they seek warm shelter. Basements and garages become overwintering sites.
Urbandale’s mature neighborhoods feature established landscaping, large trees, and well-watered lawns. This vegetation supports robust insect populations, which support robust spider populations. Homes with landscaping tight against the foundation, exterior lighting that attracts insects, and unsealed entry points give spiders easy access.
Common species in the Urbandale area include common house spiders, wolf spiders, cellar spiders (daddy longlegs), jumping spiders, and — in some cases — brown recluse spiders. The brown recluse’s range extends into southern and central Iowa, and they do occasionally turn up in Des Moines metro homes, typically in undisturbed storage areas.
Our Spider Control Process
Spider control is really about integrated pest management — address the conditions attracting spiders and the prey sustaining them, then treat directly. Here’s our approach:
Assessment. We inspect your home’s interior and exterior to identify spider species, locate concentrations, and evaluate the underlying insect activity feeding the problem. We check entry points, web locations, and environmental conditions.
Web removal and direct treatment. We knock down existing webs and egg sacs and apply targeted treatments to areas where spiders harbor — basements, crawl spaces, garage corners, behind furniture, along foundation walls, and in eaves and soffits. Direct contact and residual products reduce the existing population.
Exterior perimeter treatment. We treat around your home’s foundation, windows, doors, eaves, and other entry points. This barrier reduces both spider entry and the insect prey driving them toward your home. We also address exterior lighting recommendations — swapping to yellow or sodium vapor bulbs reduces the insects attracted to your home at night.
Ongoing prevention. Most of our Urbandale spider control customers opt for a quarterly general pest program. Regular treatments keep insect populations low year-round, which naturally reduces spider numbers. It’s the most effective long-term approach.
