Most spiders that turn up in Waterloo homes are nuisance pests — house spiders, cellar spiders, wolf spiders — that don’t pose any real health threat. But that doesn’t make finding them any less alarming, especially when populations build up in basements, corners, and garages. And two species in eastern Nebraska do matter medically: the brown recluse and the black widow. Both are present in Nebraska and Iowa, and both warrant a professional eye.
Heavy spider activity inside a home is almost always a sign of a larger prey insect population. Spiders follow food. If you’re seeing lots of spiders, it usually means you also have a lot of something else going on.
Signs of a Spider Problem
- Webs in corners, basement joists, window frames, and garage ceilings — especially cobweb-style webs from house and cellar spiders.
- Egg sacs — small silken sacs attached to webs or hidden in protected corners. Each can contain dozens to hundreds of spiderlings.
- Brown recluse sightings — flat, brown, with a distinctive violin-shaped marking behind the head. Often found in boxes, stored clothing, and undisturbed clutter.
- Wolf spiders on the floor at night — large, fast-moving, and alarming but not aggressive unless handled.
- Consistent presence despite cleaning — if webs return quickly after removal, an active infestation or ongoing prey source is sustaining the population.
Why Spiders Are Common in Waterloo
Douglas county’s expanding suburban neighborhoods adjacent to farmland and natural areas supports large spider populations. Exterior lighting attracts flying insects, which attract spiders. Landscaping close to the structure provides daytime harborage. Waterloo’s older neighborhoods and homes with unfinished basements or crawl spaces give spiders exactly what they want: undisturbed, temperature-stable harborage with easy access to prey.
Brown recluse spiders are established throughout Nebraska and Iowa. They’re not aggressive, but their bite causes serious tissue damage in some individuals. They prefer undisturbed spaces — cardboard boxes in storage areas, folded clothing, shoes left on the floor, gaps behind stored items.
Our Spider Control Process
We apply residual insecticide treatments to the areas where spiders hide, hunt, and build webs: basement perimeters, crawl space beams, garage walls, window and door frames, and exterior eaves. Web removal prior to treatment helps fresh product make contact with active populations.
We also address the underlying conditions: other pest populations that are feeding the spiders, exterior lighting choices, and harborage conditions inside and outside. Treating spiders without addressing their food source is only a partial fix.
