Signs of a Spider Problem
Spiders are generally solitary. A true “infestation” looks different than ants or roaches, but there are clear signs that your home has more than a casual spider or two:
- Webs everywhere. Cobwebs accumulating in corners, window frames, light fixtures, eaves, and basement ceilings faster than you can remove them.
- Frequent sightings. Seeing spiders regularly in living areas — bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchens — not just the garage or basement.
- Egg sacs. Small, round, silken sacs tucked into corners, behind furniture, or in closets. Each sac can contain hundreds of spiderlings.
- Large populations of other insects. Spiders go where the food is. If you have a lot of flies, gnats, ants, or other bugs inside, spiders follow.
- Brown recluse signs. Light brown spiders with a violin-shaped mark on their back, found in undisturbed areas — storage boxes, closets, behind pictures, in shoes. If you’re seeing these, call immediately.
Why Spiders Are Common in West Des Moines
Central Iowa’s climate creates a cycle that works in spiders’ favor. Spring and summer bring booming insect populations — flies, mosquitoes, gnats, beetles — and spider populations grow right alongside them. As fall temperatures drop, both prey insects and spiders push indoors.
West Des Moines has plenty of mature landscaping, wooded lots, and green spaces along Walnut Creek and Raccoon River. Exterior treatment. We apply a residual barrier around the foundation, eaves, windows, doors, and other entry points. This intercepts crawling insects and spiders before they enter your home.
Web removal. We knock down webs and egg sacs from eaves, porches, window frames, and other exterior surfaces. This disrupts breeding and forces spiders to relocate — right through our treated zones.
Interior treatment. Targeted application in basements, garages, crawl spaces, closets, and other harborage areas. We use products specifically effective against spiders, which can be harder to control than many other pests because they don’t groom themselves the way insects do.
Insect reduction. By controlling the overall insect population around your home — ants, flies, beetles, gnats — we remove the food source that draws spiders in the first place.
Entry point recommendations. We identify gaps around doors, windows, utility penetrations, and vents that should be sealed to reduce both spider and insect entry.
