Why Stink Bugs Are Common in Boys Town

The brown marmorated stink bug (Halyomorpha halys) is an invasive species from Asia, first detected in the U.S. in Pennsylvania in the late 1990s and now established throughout the Midwest. Nebraska’s climate gives stink bugs exactly what they need: warm summers to feed and reproduce, and cold winters that drive them to seek shelter in structures.

Boys Town’s residential landscape — with mature trees, gardens, and a mix of older and newer housing stock — provides both summer food sources and fall overwintering habitat. As temperatures fall in September and October, stink bugs instinctively aggregate on the sun-warmed sides of buildings and find any crack or gap to squeeze through. They can enter through window frames, door weatherstripping, utility penetrations, soffit gaps, and ridge vents. Once inside, they go dormant — until your heat wakes them up in February or March.

The critical window for prevention is early fall, before they start entering. Treatments applied in late September are far more effective than trying to deal with them after they’re already in your walls.
