If you’ve ever crushed a stink bug indoors and immediately regretted it, you already know the problem. The brown marmorated stink bug (BMSB) arrived in the Kansas City region over the last decade and has become one of the most complained-about fall invaders in Edwardsville. Once they find their way into your walls and attics, the smell alone makes winter miserable — and getting them out is harder than keeping them out in the first place.

Signs of a Stink Bug Infestation

Stink bugs follow a predictable seasonal pattern. Here’s what to watch for:

  • Stink bugs on exterior walls in fall — As September and October temperatures drop, BMSB aggregate on south- and west-facing walls, soaking up residual warmth before pushing inside.
  • Stink bugs around windows and door frames — They enter through gaps in weatherstripping, torn screens, and poorly sealed window frames.
  • Individual bugs found indoors in winter — A stink bug walking across your ceiling in January means they’re already overwintering inside your structure.
  • Large numbers emerging in spring — When temperatures warm in March and April, overwintering stink bugs become active again and start looking for a way out — through your living space.
  • Distinctive odor — A musty, coriander-like smell when bugs are disturbed or crushed.

Why Stink Bugs Are a Problem in Edwardsville

The brown marmorated stink bug is an invasive species from Asia that has no significant natural predators in Kansas. Edwardsville’s location in Wyandotte County just west of Bonner Springs puts it squarely in the Kansas City metro fall invasion zone. The residential lots with lawns, gardens, and wooded edges near the Kansas River provide stink bugs with summer habitat — they feed on fruit trees, vegetable gardens, and ornamental plants — before they pivot to structure-seeking behavior when nights cool down.

Proximity to the kansas river keeps the ground consistently moist, and the temperature swings in Wyandotte County during September and October are exactly the trigger that sends stink bugs hunting for overwintering sites. Homes with older windows, weathered soffits, or attic vents without tight screens are especially vulnerable.

BMSB populations can be enormous. A single structure can harbor hundreds or even thousands of overwintering bugs. Don’t wait until they’re already inside to take action.

Our Stink Bug Control Process

The most effective stink bug control is exterior perimeter treatment in early fall — before the bugs enter the structure. Miller Pest Solutions applies residual insecticide treatments to exterior walls, window and door frames, soffits, fascia, and other entry points, creating a barrier that kills bugs before they get inside.

Timing matters. Treatment in late August through mid-September is most effective. Waiting until October means many bugs have already found entry points.

We also recommend — and can help identify — exclusion improvements: sealing gaps around utility penetrations, replacing worn weatherstripping, and installing appropriate attic vent screens. Exclusion is the long-term solution; chemical treatment manages the current season.

If stink bugs are already inside, we can treat accessible void areas, but be aware: removal of bugs already overwintering in walls is limited without major structural access. The goal is to prevent entry, not excavate them from inside your walls.
