Signs of a Stink Bug Infestation

  • Adults on south- and west-facing exterior walls — In September and October, stink bugs aggregate on sun-warmed exterior surfaces as they seek entry points. If you see them on the outside of your house, they’re looking for a way in.
  • Bugs on window frames and around light fixtures — Inside the home, stink bugs gravitate toward warmth and light. Finding them on windowsills or ceiling fixtures in fall is a classic sign of an overwintering invasion.
  • Emerging bugs in spring — Stink bugs that overwintered inside walls and attics come out looking for exit routes in March and April. Suddenly seeing them indoors in spring often means a large population successfully overwintered in your structure.
  • Foul odor when disturbed — That pungent, cilantro-like stench is the stink bug’s chemical defense. If you crush one, the smell can linger and attract more bugs.
  • Garden and crop damage in summer — Stink bugs feed on fruit, vegetables, and ornamentals during summer months. Dimpled, discolored produce or “cat-facing” on tomatoes can indicate stink bug feeding activity.

Why Stink Bugs Are Common in Perry

The brown marmorated stink bug has no significant natural predators in North America, which allowed it to spread rapidly after arriving from Asia. Timing matters more with stink bugs than with almost any other pest. The window for effective treatment is late August through early October — before stink bugs begin entering structures in large numbers.

Miller Pest Solutions applies residual exterior perimeter treatments to building surfaces, paying close attention to areas where bugs are likely to congregate: south- and west-facing walls, window and door frames, soffits, and utility penetrations. We use products with strong residual action so bugs contacting the treated surface are eliminated before they can get inside.

We also identify and seal mechanical entry points — gaps around pipes, conduit, window frames, and soffits — to physically block access. Exclusion work combined with chemical treatment is more effective than either approach alone.

For existing indoor infestations, vacuum removal is the safest method. We do not recommend crushing stink bugs indoors — the odor is unpleasant and the chemical signal can attract more bugs.
