Bellevue is the oldest city in Nebraska — and some of its homes have been dealing with termites almost as long. Eastern subterranean termites are well-established throughout Sarpy County, feeding on structural wood in homes old and new. A colony can consume several pounds of wood per year, and most homeowners never know they’re there until the damage is done.
Miller Pest Solutions has been treating termites across the Omaha metro since 2001. We protect Bellevue homes with professional-grade treatments that create a lasting barrier between your house and the colonies underground.
Signs of a Termite Infestation
Termites work silently, inside wood and underground. Early detection is the key to limiting damage. Here’s what to watch for:
- Mud tubes. Pencil-thin tubes of soil running up foundation walls, piers, or along plumbing penetrations. These are highways between the underground colony and your home’s wood.
- Swarmers in spring. Winged termites emerge on warm days — usually after a rain — and swarm near windows, doors, and light sources. Finding them indoors means the colony is very close to or inside the structure.
- Damaged or hollow wood. Probe baseboards, door frames, and floor joists with a screwdriver. If the wood is soft, crumbles easily, or sounds hollow when tapped, termites may be feeding inside.
- Blistered or warped surfaces. termite damage behind walls can cause paint to bubble and drywall to warp, often mistaken for water damage.
- Frass or mud in wood. Unlike drywood termites (which aren’t common here), subterranean termites pack their galleries with mud and soil. Breaking open damaged wood reveals soil-filled tunnels.
Why Termites Are Common in Bellevue
Bellevue’s proximity to the Missouri River means high water tables and moisture-rich soils. Subterranean termites need soil moisture to survive, and the alluvial soils along the river valley provide exactly that.
The city’s housing stock ranges from historic homes near Olde Towne to newer developments along Highway 370. Older homes often have more wood-to-ground contact, deteriorated vapor barriers, and foundation cracks that give termites easy entry. But new construction in Bellevue isn’t immune — builders disturb existing termite colonies during grading and excavation, and those colonies eventually find the new structures.
Offutt Air Force Base brings a large transient population. Homes that sit vacant during PCS moves or deployment can develop termite problems that go unnoticed for months. Regular assessments matter — especially in Bellevue.
Our Termite Control Process
Termite treatment isn’t DIY territory. It requires specialized equipment, professional-grade products, and knowledge of how termites interact with your specific foundation type.
- Full property assessment. We examine the foundation, crawlspace, basement, garage, exterior wood, and landscaping. We look for active termites, mud tubes, damage, and conditions that invite infestation.
- Liquid barrier treatment. We trench and treat around the foundation perimeter, injecting termiticide into the soil to create a continuous barrier. Termites that pass through the treated zone pick up a lethal dose and spread it to other colony members.
- Sub-slab injection. For homes on concrete slabs, we drill through the concrete at intervals and inject termiticide beneath the slab where termites enter.
- Direct treatment of active areas. Where we find live termites, we treat those zones directly for immediate knockdown.
- Ongoing monitoring and annual assessments. Termite barriers need to be maintained and inspected. We recommend annual checks to ensure your protection stays intact.
