termites cause more property damage in the United States than fires, floods, and tornadoes combined. And Blair, Nebraska is right in the thick of subterranean termite territory. These insects work silently — chewing through wood framing, floor joists, and structural elements for months or years before homeowners notice anything. By the time you see visible damage, they’ve been at it a while.

Miller Pest Solutions has been protecting Omaha-area homes from termites since 2001. We know how subterranean termites operate in Nebraska’s soil conditions, and we have the tools and experience to stop them.

Signs of a Termite Infestation

Termites are called “silent destroyers” for a reason. But they do leave clues:

  • Mud tubes. Pencil-width tubes of dried mud running up foundation walls, along pipes, or in crawl spaces. Subterranean termites build these tubes to travel between their underground colony and the wood they’re feeding on. This is the most definitive sign.
  • Swarmers. Winged termites emerging inside your home — usually in spring. They look similar to flying ants but have straight antennae, a thick waist, and equal-length wings. Finding swarmers indoors means there’s an active colony in or very near your structure.
  • Discarded wings. After swarming, termites shed their wings. Piles of small, translucent wings near windows, doors, or light fixtures indicate a recent swarm.
  • Hollow-sounding wood. Tap on baseboards, door frames, or window sills. If they sound hollow or papery, termites may have eaten the wood from the inside out.
  • Sagging floors or sticky doors. As termites compromise structural wood, floors may dip and door frames can warp. These symptoms often get blamed on settling or humidity — but termites could be the cause.

Why Termites Are Common in Blair

Eastern Nebraska has heavy subterranean termite pressure. The clay-heavy soils in the Blair area retain moisture well, which is exactly what subterranean termites need. Their colonies live underground — sometimes millions of individuals in a single colony — and they forage outward in search of cellulose (wood).

Blair’s older homes with basements and crawl spaces give termites direct access points. But newer homes aren’t safe either. Construction disturbs soil and can actually bring termite colonies closer to the structure. Mulch beds against foundations, poor drainage, and wood-to-soil contact all increase risk.

Nebraska’s freeze-thaw cycle doesn’t kill termite colonies. They just move deeper underground during winter and resume feeding when the soil warms up. Year-round protection is the only real answer.

Our Termite Control Process

Comprehensive assessment. We inspect your foundation, crawl spaces, basement, and exterior for signs of termite activity and conditions that invite them. We’re looking at mud tubes, wood damage, moisture issues, and potential entry points.

Treatment options. Depending on your situation, we use liquid termiticides applied to the soil around your foundation, creating a continuous barrier that termites can’t cross without picking up a lethal dose. We also offer baiting systems that eliminate entire colonies. We’ll recommend what makes sense for your property — not just what’s most expensive.

Prevention. We’ll identify and advise on conditions that make your home vulnerable. Things like wood debris in crawl spaces, mulch piled against the foundation, moisture problems, and wood-to-soil contact. Fixing these issues makes treatment more effective and reduces future risk.

Ongoing monitoring. Termite protection works best as a continuous program. We offer monitoring plans that catch new activity early — before damage occurs. Annual assessments keep you protected year after year.
