Signs of Termite Activity
- Mud tubes on the foundation. Subterranean termites build shelter tubes from soil and saliva. These tubes run vertically along foundation walls, sometimes branching across concrete surfaces. They’re usually about the width of a pencil.
- Swarming termites. In spring (typically April through June in Nebraska), reproductive termites emerge in large numbers to start new colonies. Finding winged insects inside your home — especially near windows — is a strong indicator of an established colony.
- Damaged wood. Wood that’s been hollowed out by termites looks layered or honeycombed. It may crumble when probed with a screwdriver. Door frames, baseboards, and window sills are common spots.
- Tight-fitting doors and windows. termite damage to framing can cause doors and windows to shift and stick. If things suddenly don’t open or close smoothly, it’s worth investigating.
- Discarded wings. After swarming, termites shed their wings. Piles of small, uniform wings near windowsills or light fixtures indicate a recent swarm event.
Why Termites Threaten Boys Town Properties
Boys Town sits in the west Omaha area, where the soil composition — loamy clay that holds moisture — supports strong termite colonies. Subterranean termites need soil moisture to survive, and the Omaha metro provides it in abundance.
Many homes in the Boys Town area were built in the mid-20th century, with construction practices that can be conducive to termite activity. Concrete block foundations, wood framing in contact with soil, and older landscaping that directs moisture toward the house all increase risk.

Our Termite Control Process
Detailed assessment. We examine the entire structure — interior and exterior. Foundation walls, basement joists, sill plates, window frames, crawl spaces, garage framing, and any wood-to-soil contact points. We document active termite areas and existing damage.
Liquid termiticide treatment. We create a continuous treated barrier in the soil around your foundation. This is done by trenching along exterior walls and drilling through concrete (garage floors, porches, sidewalks) where necessary. The termiticide is non-repellent — meaning termites pass through it unknowingly and spread it to other colony members.
Interior treatment. If active termites are found inside, we treat wall voids, plumbing penetrations, and other access points directly. Where mud tubes are present, we remove them to enable clear monitoring afterward.
Monitoring and prevention. We recommend annual termite monitoring to catch any new activity early. For some properties, we install in-ground monitoring stations around the perimeter for continuous detection.
