Termites rarely announce themselves with obvious damage until a problem has progressed significantly. These early warning signs matter:

  • Mud tubes — pencil-width tunnels of mud running along foundation walls, floor joists, support piers, or up from the soil to wood. Termites build these to travel between soil and structure without exposure to open air. Finding one is a serious red flag.
  • Swarmer wings — in spring, reproductive termites (swarmers) emerge in large numbers and shed their wings immediately after. Finding piles of small, equal-length wings near windows, doors, or in window wells indicates a nearby mature colony.
  • Hollow-sounding wood — tap structural timbers, door frames, baseboards, or window sills. Termite-damaged wood sounds hollow because the cellulose interior has been consumed while the outer shell remains intact.
  • Blistered or buckling wood surfaces — moisture from termite activity causes paint and wood to bubble or warp in areas where no water source is obvious.
  • Tight-fitting doors and windows — termite damage and associated moisture can cause wood framing to swell and shift, making doors and windows suddenly difficult to open or close.

Why Termites Are Common in Carlisle
