Eastern subterranean termites are the primary species in Glenwood and throughout Nebraska and Iowa. They live in the soil, build mud tubes to reach wood, and can work year-round. Signs of a Termite Infestation

  • Mud tubes: Pencil-width tunnels of mud running along the foundation wall, piers, or up from the soil to wood members. These are how subterranean termites travel above ground without drying out.
  • Swarmers: Winged reproductive termites emerging in spring — often near windows, doors, or light sources. Finding discarded wings indoors is a clear warning sign.
  • Damaged wood: Wood that sounds hollow when tapped, bubbling or uneven paint on walls, or wood that appears carved out with a honeycomb interior pattern.
  • Frass (drywood termite): Small piles of wood-colored pellets below wooden structures. Less common here than subterranean species but worth knowing.
  • Tight-fitting doors and windows: As termites damage wood framing, structural shifts can cause doors and windows to stick — though this can have other causes too.

Why Termites Are a Risk in Glenwood

Eastern subterranean termites are found throughout IA and are particularly active in the Missouri River valley region. The rich, moist soil and warm-season temperatures accelerate colony development. Homes with wood-to-soil contact, moisture-damaged structural wood, or older foundations without modern termite barriers are at elevated risk. Properties adjacent to wooded areas or near agricultural fields with decaying organic matter provide ideal termite habitat nearby.

Our Termite Control Process

We use liquid termiticide treatments (Termidor-type products) applied to the soil around and beneath the structure to create a treated zone termites cannot detect and will not avoid. As termites pass through, they pick up the active ingredient and spread it throughout the colony. This approach eliminates the colony rather than just creating a barrier they might eventually find a way around.

Bait systems are available for situations where liquid treatment isn’t practical. We’ll discuss options and recommend what makes most sense based on the structure, soil conditions, and level of activity. Post-treatment assessments confirm the treatment is working.
