Eastern subterranean termites are active throughout western Iowa, and Missouri Valley is squarely in their range. The Missouri River valley’s moist, organic-rich soil is exactly the kind of environment these insects thrive in. What makes termites particularly destructive is that they work silently — inside walls, under floors, in crawl spaces — often for years before any visible damage appears.

Miller Pest Solutions provides professional termite assessment and control for Missouri Valley properties. We’ve been protecting homes in this region since 2001.

Signs of a Termite Infestation

  • Mud tubes — subterranean termites build protective tunnels made of soil and saliva to travel between the ground and wood. Look along foundation walls, basement block, and floor joists.
  • Swarmers or discarded wings — reproductive termites swarm in spring to start new colonies. Finding winged termites or small piles of shed wings near windows, doorways, or light sources is a serious warning sign.
  • Hollow or damaged wood — tap on wood trim, baseboards, and structural lumber. A hollow sound indicates termites may have consumed the wood interior.
  • Buckling floors or ceilings — as structural wood is consumed, floors may feel soft or buckle, and doors or windows may become difficult to open or close.
  • Visible galleries — damaged wood with maze-like tunnels running through it, often with a mud-like material filling some passages.

Why Termites Are Common in Missouri Valley

The Missouri River floodplain provides ideal subterranean termite habitat. The soil here is deep, moist, and rich — conditions that support large termite colonies year-round. Spring warmth triggers swarming activity as established colonies send out reproductives to start new colonies. Missouri Valley’s mix of older and newer construction means varying levels of built-in termite protection.

Homes with moisture issues in crawl spaces, wood debris near the foundation, and any wood-to-soil contact are at elevated risk.

Our Termite Control Process

  • assessment — We assess the full structure for termite evidence, moisture issues, and conditions conducive to infestation.
  • Liquid termiticide treatment — A continuous chemical barrier applied to the soil around and beneath the foundation. Termites encounter the treated zone as they travel through the soil.
  • Bait stations — Can be used as a standalone system or to supplement liquid treatments where drilling into concrete isn’t ideal.
  • Treatment documentation — We provide written records of all treatment work performed.
