termites cause more structural damage to U.S. homes every year than fires and windstorms combined — and most homeowners insurance doesn’t cover it. In Iowa, the Eastern Subterranean Termite is the species responsible for structural damage across Polk County and the surrounding area. They’re underground, they’re silent, and by the time most homeowners notice them, they’ve often been feeding for years.

Signs of a Termite Infestation

Termites work inside wood and soil — visible signs often appear only after significant damage has occurred. Know what to look for:

  • Mud tubes — Pencil-width tubes of soil and wood debris running along foundation walls, piers, sill plates, or structural members. Subterranean termites build these to travel from soil to wood without exposure to open air.
  • Swarmer activity — Winged termites (swarmers) emerge in spring, typically April through June in Iowa, when a mature colony sends out reproductives to start new colonies. Finding winged insects — or discarded wings — near windows and doors is a serious warning sign.
  • Hollow-sounding wood — Tap suspect structural wood. Termites hollow wood from the inside out, leaving a thin shell that sounds hollow when knocked.
  • Buckling paint or frass — Blistering paint on wood surfaces can indicate termite activity beneath. Small piles of pellet-like frass (less common with subterranean species) can also appear.
  • Tight-fitting doors and windows — As termite-damaged wood distorts with moisture, doors and windows may stick or become difficult to open.

Why Termites Are Common in Mitchellville

Iowa’s clay-heavy, moisture-retaining soils are excellent termite habitat. Polk County sits in Iowa’s moderate-to-heavy termite pressure zone. Mitchellville’s development pattern — with homes built on slabs and with crawl spaces, wood-frame construction, and wood in contact with soil — provides plenty of food and access for subterranean termites.

Wood mulch in landscaping beds, wood debris against foundations, and moisture from poor drainage or grading all attract termites and create conditions that accelerate infestation. Older homes that haven’t been treated historically are at particular risk.

Our Termite Control Process

Miller Pest Solutions uses proven liquid soil treatment and baiting approaches to eliminate termite colonies and protect structures long-term.

  • Thorough assessment — We inspect accessible crawl spaces, basements, sill plates, floor joists, foundation walls, and exterior wood for evidence of termite activity and conditions conducive to infestation.
  • Liquid soil treatment (Termidor) — We trench and treat the soil around the foundation perimeter with a non-repellent termiticide. Termites pass through treated zones and carry the product back to the colony, eliminating it from the inside out.
  • Bait systems — In situations where liquid treatment isn’t appropriate, we install in-ground bait stations that intercept foraging termites and deliver a colony-eliminating bait.
  • Conducive condition recommendations — We identify and advise on conditions that invite termite activity: wood-to-soil contact, moisture issues, and wood debris near the structure.

Why Choose Miller Pest Solutions

Termite treatment is one area where experience and product selection matter enormously. Miller Pest Solutions has been treating termites in Iowa since 2001 — we know the local species, the soil conditions, and the construction types that affect treatment strategy. We use Termidor, the industry gold standard. We’re QualityPro Certified and NPMA members, and Joel Miller has been in pest control since 2007.
