termites cause more structural damage to U.S. homes every year than fires, floods, and windstorms combined. In Omaha, the eastern subterranean termite is the species to know. These are ground-dwelling insects that travel through the soil and enter structures through foundation cracks, utility penetrations, and any wood-to-soil contact. They’re active year-round underground and can be working in your home’s structure for years before visible damage becomes apparent.

Signs of a Termite Infestation

Termites are called the “silent destroyer” for a reason. By the time obvious damage is visible, the infestation is often significant. Early detection makes a real difference.

  • Mud tubes on foundation walls — Subterranean termites build pencil-width mud tubes from the soil up to their food source. These tubes protect them from desiccation and predators. Finding a mud tube on your foundation or basement wall is a near-certain sign of active termite presence.
  • Swarmers (winged termites) — Each spring, mature colonies release winged reproductives to start new colonies. Finding swarmers indoors — typically near windows or light fixtures — means a colony is established nearby, possibly in your structure. Discarded wings on windowsills are a common sign.
  • Wood that sounds hollow — Tap on wood framing, door frames, or baseboards. A hollow sound where there shouldn’t be one can indicate termite excavation inside.
  • Bubbling or uneven paint — As termites damage wood near the surface, the paint above it may bubble, blister, or appear water-damaged even without a moisture source.
  • Tight-fitting doors or windows — termite damage and the moisture associated with it can cause wood to warp, making doors and windows difficult to open or close.

Why Termites Are Common in Omaha

Omaha sits in a high termite pressure zone. The eastern subterranean termite is present throughout Nebraska and is aggressive in the Omaha metro. The city’s soil conditions — including the clay-heavy soils common throughout much of eastern Nebraska — retain moisture well, creating favorable conditions for termite colonies near foundations.

Older homes in established Omaha neighborhoods are particularly vulnerable. Homes built before modern construction practices often have wood in contact with soil, inadequate vapor barriers, and foundation types that give termites easy access. Even newer construction isn’t immune — termites will find any gap in a foundation or untreated structural wood.

Termite swarm season in Omaha typically peaks in April and May, when warm temperatures and spring rains trigger swarms. Seeing swarmers inside your home during this period is a serious warning sign that deserves immediate attention.

Our Termite Control Process

Termite treatment is not something to cut corners on. A complete solution needs to address the colony — not just the individual termites visible in the wood.

Miller Pest Solutions offers liquid termiticide treatments using premium products that create a continuous treated zone in the soil around and under the foundation. This eliminates termites as they travel through treated soil and, with certain product formulations, spreads through the colony via contact transfer between workers. We drill, inject, and treat according to label specifications and the specific construction type of your home — slab, basement, crawlspace, or combination.

We also offer termite baiting systems as an alternative or supplemental approach, particularly in situations where liquid treatment is impractical. Bait stations are installed in the soil around the perimeter, monitored for termite activity, and loaded with bait when termites are found. Colony elimination follows over time.

Every treatment includes a detailed assessment of the structure to document active infestation areas, existing damage, and conducive conditions. We explain exactly what we found and what we’re recommending before any work begins.
