Wasps nesting on your Gladstone home aren’t just annoying — they’re a safety hazard. Paper wasps building under your eaves. Yellowjackets nesting in the ground near your walkway. Mud daubers caking the side of your garage. Some sting aggressively when disturbed, and for people with allergies, a single sting can mean a trip to the ER.
Miller Pest Solutions has been removing wasp nests and preventing re-nesting across the Kansas City metro since 2001. We handle it safely so you don’t have to.
Signs of a Wasp Problem
Wasps aren’t subtle. But knowing what you’re dealing with helps determine the best approach.
- Visible nests: Paper wasps build open, umbrella-shaped nests under eaves, porch ceilings, and deck rails. Yellowjackets build enclosed nests — often underground, in wall voids, or inside hollow structures.
- Increased wasp activity: Wasps flying in and out of a specific area repeatedly indicates a nearby nest. Watch for flight patterns — they’ll lead you to the nest entrance.
- Aggressive behavior near your home: Yellowjackets become especially aggressive in late summer and fall when the colony is large and food sources are dwindling. If wasps are buzzing your outdoor eating areas or dive-bombing you near the house, there’s a nest close by.
- Mud tubes on walls: Mud daubers build individual tube-shaped nests on exterior walls, in garages, and under covered areas. Less dangerous than yellowjackets but still unwelcome.
- Wasps entering wall voids: If you see wasps going into gaps in your siding, soffits, or foundation, they may be building a nest inside the wall. This requires professional treatment.
Why Wasps Are Common in Gladstone
Every spring, overwintered wasp queens emerge and start building new colonies. Gladstone’s homes — with their eaves, soffits, porches, and outbuildings — provide sheltered nest sites everywhere you look. By mid-summer, colonies have grown to peak size with hundreds or even thousands of workers.
Yellowjackets are particularly problematic in the KC area. They’re attracted to protein and sugars, which is why they crash every outdoor barbecue and hover around trash cans from July through October. Ground-nesting yellowjackets are a serious sting risk — especially when nests are in high-traffic areas of the yard.
Gladstone’s mature trees also provide nesting habitat. Bald-faced hornets build large, football-shaped paper nests in tree branches, and while they’re usually not aggressive unless their nest is disturbed, accidental encounters during tree trimming or yard work can result in multiple stings.
Our Wasp Control Process
Nest removal is straightforward when you know what you’re doing and have the right equipment. We identify the species first — it determines how we approach the nest safely and effectively.
For exposed paper wasp nests, we treat the nest directly with a knockdown product, then remove it. For yellowjacket nests — whether underground or in a wall void — we apply dust or liquid insecticide directly into the nest entrance. The product is carried deep into the colony by returning workers, eliminating the entire population over 24-48 hours.
As part of our general pest control service, we also treat common nesting areas preventively. Applying residual products to eaves, soffits, porch ceilings, and other favored nest sites discourages queens from building there in the first place. Prevention is always better than removal.
For wall void nests, we treat through the entry point and recommend sealing the gap after the colony is dead to prevent future use of the same cavity.
