Signs of a Wasp Infestation

- Wasps flying a consistent path to and from a fixed point. That’s commuter traffic — workers heading to and from the nest. Follow the flight line and you’ll find the colony.
- Papery nests under eaves, porch ceilings, or deck structures. Paper wasps build open-celled nests that start small but grow throughout the season.
- Wasps emerging from a hole in the ground. Classic yellow jacket behavior. The nest is underground, and the hole might only be the size of a quarter.
- Buzzing inside walls. If you hear a faint hum or see wasps coming and going from a crack in the siding, the colony has moved into a wall void. These are the trickiest to deal with.
- Wasps at your outdoor meals. Late-summer yellow jackets scavenge protein and sugar aggressively. If they’re crashing every barbecue, there’s a large colony nearby.
Why Wasps Thrive in Grimes
Grimes has what wasps want: shelter, food, and water.
The city’s rapid residential growth means new homes with untreated soffits, fresh wood trim, and landscaping that’s still maturing. Wasp queens love new construction — fewer competing colonies, plenty of undisturbed nesting surfaces, and the gaps in new builds give them access to wall voids and attic spaces.
Iowa’s summers do the rest. From late April through October, temperatures support active wasp colonies. Yellow jacket populations peak in August and September, which is when most sting incidents happen. The warm, wet spring weather we’ve had in recent years only accelerates colony growth.

We take a targeted approach. Blanket spraying doesn’t solve wasp problems — finding and eliminating the nest does.
Species identification. Paper wasps, yellow jackets, bald-faced hornets, and mud daubers each require a different strategy. We figure out exactly what you have and where it’s nesting.
Direct nest treatment. We apply professional products directly to the nest and entry points. Underground nests get treated at the opening and internally. Aerial nests get knocked down after treatment. Wall void colonies get treated through the access point to eliminate the queen and workers inside.
Nest removal. We physically remove nests when possible. Old nests don’t get reused by the same colony, but they can harbor secondary pests and they’re unsightly.
Preventive treatment. We treat eaves, soffits, porch areas, and other common nesting spots with a residual product that deters new queens from setting up shop. Best done in spring before nesting season kicks off.
The Danger of DIY wasp removal
A single paper wasp nest on a low eave? You might handle that with a can of spray. But most wasp situations in Grimes are more complicated.
Yellow jacket nests underground or in walls can contain 2,000 to 5,000 workers by late summer. Spraying the entrance often just makes them angry — and they’ll find alternate exits, sometimes right into your home. People who are allergic to stings face serious medical risk. And even people without allergies can have dangerous reactions to multiple stings from an agitated colony.
