Wasps and yellow jackets become noticeably more aggressive in late summer — and for good reason. By August and September, colonies have reached their maximum size, worker populations are in the tens of thousands in large yellow jacket nests, and colony defensive behavior is at its peak. It’s also the season when food sources change, making workers more irritable and more likely to sting without much provocation. The three species that cause most problems in central Iowa are different in important ways: paper wasps build open, umbrella-shaped nests under eaves and on structures; yellow jackets build enclosed, papery nests in trees, under eaves, or underground; bald-faced hornets build large, gray, enclosed nests usually in trees or on the side of structures. Yellow jackets are by far the most dangerous, particularly when nesting underground or inside wall voids where the nest can be very large and the entrance is easily disturbed accidentally.

Signs of a Wasp or Stinging Insect Problem

  • Visible nest structure — paper wasp nests look like an open honeycomb of hexagonal cells, typically found under eaves, on porch ceilings, on deck railings, in shrubs, or on outdoor structures. Yellow jacket nests are enclosed papery globes in trees, shrubs, or attached to the structure. Bald-faced hornet nests are large, gray, football-shaped structures usually in trees or on exterior walls.
  • Yellow jackets entering and exiting a ground hole, wall gap, or structural void — this indicates an underground nest, a wall void nest, or a nest inside the structure. These are the most hazardous because nests in these locations are often very large and can be accidentally disturbed through normal activity.
  • Frequent wasp traffic returning repeatedly to a specific point — workers returning to a nest location in steady streams, particularly in the morning and throughout mid-day when activity is highest
  • Wasps appearing inside the living space — yellow jackets that have nested inside a wall void can find their way into living areas through electrical outlets, light fixtures, recessed lights, or ceiling penetrations. This typically happens in late summer and fall.
  • Previous nest locations — wasps don’t reuse old nests, but they return to the same structures year after year to build new ones. If you’ve had nests in a specific location before, expect them again.

Why Wasps Are Common in Indianola

Indianola is the Warren County seat, about 15 miles south of Des Moines.
