Signs You Have a Wasp Problem
Don’t wait for someone to get stung. Watch for these early indicators:
- Wasps hovering near the same spot on your home. Repetitive flight patterns mean a nest is close. Check under eaves, behind gutters, inside porch light fixtures, and along the roofline.
- Small papery nests on overhangs. Paper wasp nests start the size of a golf ball in spring. By mid-summer, they can be the size of a fist with 20–30 active workers.
- Ground holes with wasp traffic. Yellow jackets nest underground. You’ll see steady in-and-out activity at a small hole in your yard, garden bed, or along a foundation wall.
- Wasps indoors. A wasp inside your home once might be a fluke. Multiple wasps indoors over several days means a colony has access to your living space through a wall void, attic, or gap in the structure.
- Large gray nest in a tree or on a structure. That’s likely a bald-faced hornet nest. They’re hard to miss once they reach full size — sometimes bigger than a basketball.

Location and landscaping. Johnston is full of mature trees, well-maintained yards, community green spaces, and mixed residential-commercial development. All of that supports healthy wasp populations.
Iowa’s climate is the other factor. Our warm, humid summers give colonies a long growing season. A queen that emerges in April has five solid months to build her colony before the first frost. Every wasp job starts with figuring out what we’re dealing with. Different species, different approach.
Inspect and identify. We locate all active nests and determine the species. Paper wasps, yellow jackets, and hornets each have different nesting habits, aggression levels, and treatment requirements.
Treat the nest. We use professional-grade products applied directly to the nest and colony. For ground nests, we treat into the cavity. For wall voids, we access the colony through the entry point. Aerial nests get treated and physically removed when safe to do so.
Clean up. Abandoned or treated nests get removed to prevent secondary pest issues. Dead insect material and nest debris can attract carpet beetles and other scavengers.
Prevent future nesting. We treat vulnerable areas of the home — eaves, soffits, porch ceilings, garage overhangs — with a residual barrier that discourages new queens from nesting. Spring is the best time for preventive treatments, but we can help any time during the season.
