Few things ruin a backyard barbecue faster than a wasp nest under the deck. Or in the eave above the front door. Or inside the wall of your garage. Wasps are aggressive when they feel their nest is threatened, and unlike bees, they can sting multiple times. For people with allergies, a single sting can be life-threatening. In Mission, wasp activity ramps up every spring and peaks in late summer — right when you want to be outside the most.
Miller Pest Solutions has been safely removing wasp nests and managing stinging insect populations across the Kansas City metro since 2001. We handle it so you don’t have to.
Signs of a Wasp Problem
Wasps aren’t subtle. Here’s what to look for:
- Visible nests. Paper wasps build open, umbrella-shaped nests under eaves, porch ceilings, deck railings, and playground equipment. Yellowjackets build enclosed nests — in the ground, inside wall voids, or in attic spaces.
- Wasps flying in and out of a specific spot. A steady stream of wasps entering and exiting a gap in your siding, soffit, or foundation means there’s a nest inside.
- Increased wasp activity near food and drinks. Yellowjackets are attracted to sugary drinks, fruit, and meat. If they’re pestering you at outdoor meals, a nest is nearby.
- Chewed wood surfaces. Wasps chew wood fiber to build their nests. You may notice small bare patches on wooden fences, deck rails, or siding where wasps have been harvesting material.
- Wasps inside your home. Finding wasps indoors — especially in upper floors or attic spaces — suggests a nest in the wall void or attic.
Why Wasps Are Common in Mission
Mission’s residential character — lots of eaves, porches, decks, sheds, and playsets — provides ideal nesting sites for paper wasps and mud daubers. Every overhang and sheltered corner is a potential home for a new colony in spring.
Yellowjackets take advantage of underground voids in yards, old rodent burrows, and gaps in retaining walls and landscaping. They’re especially aggressive in late summer and early fall when colonies are at peak size and natural food sources start declining — that’s when they start showing up at your outdoor gatherings.
The Kansas City metro’s warm season supports multiple wasp species simultaneously. Paper wasps, yellowjackets, European hornets, and mud daubers are all common in Johnson County. Each has different nesting habits and aggression levels, which is why proper identification matters before treatment.
Our Wasp Control Process
Safety first. Wasp nest removal can be dangerous, especially for ground nests and void nests where thousands of wasps may be present. Our technicians are trained in stinging insect management and equipped with the right protective gear and products.
For visible nests — paper wasp nests on eaves, light fixtures, and similar structures — we treat the nest directly with a fast-acting product that eliminates the colony. We then remove the nest to prevent it from attracting new wasps.
For nests inside wall voids, soffits, or underground, we use dust or aerosol treatments injected directly into the nest entrance. These products spread through the colony and kill wasps throughout the void. We don’t recommend sealing the entry hole immediately — trapped wasps may chew their way into your living space instead.
We also offer preventive treatments in early spring to discourage nest building. Applying residual product to common nesting surfaces — eaves, porch ceilings, fence tops, deck undersides — before queens establish new colonies significantly reduces wasp pressure for the season.
