Signs of a Wasp Problem
Wasps are hard to miss once they’re established. But early detection — before nests get large — makes removal safer and easier.
- Wasps flying in a pattern. If you see wasps repeatedly flying to and from the same spot — under an eave, inside a vent, behind shutters, near a hole in the ground — there’s a nest.
- Visible nests. Paper wasp nests are open, umbrella-shaped combs hanging from eaves, porch ceilings, or railings. Yellowjacket and hornet nests are enclosed — sometimes the size of a basketball or larger — attached to trees, shrubs, or building exteriors. Yellowjackets also nest underground.
- Increased wasp activity. A noticeable increase in wasp sightings around your outdoor eating areas, garbage cans, or landscaping from midsummer through fall.
- Wasps entering the house. If wasps are getting inside — through attic vents, soffit gaps, or gaps around windows — a nest may be built inside a wall void or attic space.
- Aggressive behavior. Wasps become more defensive as colonies grow through summer. If you’re getting buzzed or chased in a specific area of your yard, a nest is nearby.
Why Wasps Are Common in West Des Moines
Iowa’s warm, humid summers are prime wasp season. Queens emerge from overwintering in April and May, build small starter nests, and colonies grow aggressively through June, July, and August. By late summer, a yellowjacket colony can contain thousands of workers.
West Des Moines provides plenty of nesting opportunities. Residential homes with covered porches, soffits, eaves, and attic vents offer sheltered spots for paper wasp nests. Landscaping — especially dense shrubs, ornamental grasses, and flower beds near the Jordan Creek area and throughout suburban neighborhoods — attracts wasps looking for food (they feed on caterpillars, flies, and sweet substances).

Nest identification and location. We locate all active nests on your property — visible and hidden. Wasps sometimes nest inside wall voids, attics, or underground burrows that aren’t immediately obvious.
Safe nest treatment. We apply professional products directly to the nest. For aerial nests, we treat and then remove the nest once activity ceases. For ground nests, we treat the entry point and surrounding soil. We have the protective equipment and products to do this safely — this is not a DIY job.
Wall void and attic nests. If wasps are nesting inside your home’s structure, we treat the void through existing entry points or small access points. We’ll seal the entry after treatment to prevent reuse.
Preventive treatment. We treat common nesting sites — eaves, soffits, porch ceilings, deck undersides — with residual products that discourage new nest construction. This is especially effective in spring before queens select nesting locations.
