When Do Termites Swarm In Omaha & The Midwest?

Termites in Omaha and throughout the Midwest swarm in the spring, usually from March to May. Termite swarms typically happen on a warm day after a significant rainfall. During a swarm, the reproductive members of a termite colony leave their existing nest to mate and establish new colonies elsewhere. As March marks the beginning of termite swarming season in our region, it's an ideal time for homeowners to educate themselves about these winged termites and take preventative measures to avoid termite infestation in their homes.

How to identify termite swarmers

It is important to be able to recognize swarmers as they are a clear indication of termite infestation. Swarmers are different from worker termites as they come out into the open where they can be seen. However, they can be mistaken for winged ants. Here's a quick guide to help you identify subterranean termite swarmers:

  • Two pairs of wings that are the same length
  • Wings may appear white, light brown, or slightly yellowish
  • Uniform body shape that ranges in color from light brown to black
  • Straight antennae

Flying carpenter ants, on the other hand, also have two pairs of wings but the front wings are larger than the back pair. Their bodies are distinctively segmented, evidenced by their extremely narrow waists, and they have elbowed antennae.

When you're in your yard, you might see a swarmer crawling on the ground or on a walkway. You might even find these pests squeezing through outlets or cracks in the walls or foundation.  When you see any insect with long wings, stop and consider it closely. You may be catching a glimpse of a termite swarmer. That glimpse might be your only warning sign.

What does a swarm indicate?

It is important to understand the significance of termite swarmers and what they are trying to tell you. As we mentioned earlier, they are a warning sign of termite activity, but there are a few more things that you should keep in mind. Here are some quick facts:

If you spot a swarm of winged termites in your yard, it is a clear indication that there is a termite nest nearby, and it could even be on your property or your neighbor's property. The best way to find out is by getting a termite inspection.

However, if you see a swarm inside your house, then it is a definite sign that there is a well-established termite colony living in or near your home. In that case, it is advisable to contact a local company that specializes in termite control right away.

If you happen to spot termite swarmers on your property, you can rely on Miller Pest & Termite for accurate identification and effective treatment. What to do before you see swarmers

Here are some tips to help prevent termites from infesting your property:

  • Do not overwater your lawn and garden because termites love soil with a high moisture content.
  • Clear away logs, stumps, and other dead or decaying wood that termites would love to infest.
  • Seal cracks, gaps, and openings on the exterior of the house to make it harder for termites to sneak inside.
  • Make sure your home has minimal wood-to-soil contact to make it harder for termites to get inside.
  • Consider using a material other than wood to build a new deck or porch.
  • Replace water-damaged wood inside your home to discourage termites.
  • Repair leaking pipes and other plumbing issues to prevent water damage.
  • Clean out the gutters regularly to ensure leaves, twigs, and other organic debris do not clog and create a termite-friendly environment.
  • Store firewood well away from the house and up off the ground.
